Art Changes Student Exhibition Opening Reception Alameda Saturday May 4 1:00pm       FREE

Art Changes Student Exhibition Opening Reception

Event starts in

15 Days 17 Hours 51 Minutes

This is My Alameda Story Alameda Education Foundation returns to the K Gallery to exhibit student visual art and student poetry based on the work of two Bay Area painters as well as the writing of a Bay Area poet. Alex D. da Silva’s Abstract painting Warriors examines Alameda’s history. Bill Jeng’s Lion Dance paintings gave him strength during the Covid lockdown. Shanti Lair-Croom celebrates her heritage in her poem Living Poetically. The inward reflection displayed in the artists’ work inspired the theme of this year’s exhibit: This is My Alameda Story. With support from the Alameda Education Foundation, students from all 9 AUSD elementary schools created art in their classrooms based on the work of the three Art Changes artists. Students combined realism and abstraction in saltwater watercolors. These dream-like paintings offer clues to what is important to each individual student. Students constructed carnival masks that were poignant, vivid and fierce. And students wrote about themselves and the objects, animals and people in their lives. Art Changes student artwork is created and contributed by students at Bay Farm, Earhart, Edison, Franklin, Love, Maya Lin, Otis, Paden and Ruby Bridges Elementary.

Carving the Divine Buddhist Sculptors of Japan Alameda Sunday Apr 21 2:00pm       $20 - $40

Carving the Divine Buddhist Sculptors of Japan

Event starts in

02 Days 18 Hours 51 Minutes

An Award-Winning Film by Yujiro Seki Co-presented by the Buddhist Temple of Alameda “Carving the Divine” is a beautifully made documentary film that offers a rare look into the art of busshi, a 1400-year-old Buddhist woodcarving tradition, and the practitioners struggling to preserve its legacy in a rapidly changing Japan. “‘Carving the Divine’ is more than a movie about amazing wood sculptors of Japan. To me, the movie is about the Master-Apprentice, or the Master-Disciple relationship, and how this is still being transmitted in the traditional manner…..stern, but yet ultimately kind, in training the apprentice to be a true artist in both skill and spirit.” — Rev. Marvin Harada, Bishop, Buddhist Churches of America

Puccini Messa di Gloria San Francisco Sunday May 5 4:00pm       $30-$50

Puccini Messa di Gloria

Event starts in

16 Days 20 Hours 51 Minutes

The Golden Gate Men’s Chorus (GGMC), under the direction of Joseph Piazza, presents Giacomo Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, in collaboration with the Peninsula Women’s Chorus (PWC), under the direction of Dr. Anne K. Hege. An operatic mass or a sacred opera? No matter how you describe it, Puccini’s masterful choral work has it all — drama, beauty, mystery, passion, and the joyful, gorgeous vocal lines that immediately let you know it’s Puccini. Come hear the Golden Gate Men’s Chorus in concert with the Peninsula Women's Chorus this spring in a rarely heard performance of Puccini’s Messa di Gloria. Composed in 1880 and not revived for a second performance until 1952, this rediscovered choral work delights and moves audiences from the opening beauty of Kyrie, the jubilant Gloria, and the drama of the Credo, to the closing prayerful Agnus Dei, with music that hints to many of the familiar Puccini arias we know and love. Tenor Alex Boyer, who recently made his Metropolitan debut and is a resident tenor with Opera San Jose and graduate of the Merola Opera and Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Programs, will be the featured soloist. Both PWC and GGMC will also perform solo sets. The Peninsula Women’s Chorus’s selection will include the world premiere of “Night into Dawn,” a newly commissioned work written by Theresa Wong, PWC’s Composer-in-Residence and dedicated to the community of Lahaina. GGMC’s solo set will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Anton Bruckner in a performance of his sacred motets.
