An Evening of Music and Dance with Melissa Cruz and Guest Artists The dynamism and allure of flamenco come alive on stage in an evening of dance and music with Melissa Cruz. Joined by her cast of seasoned professionals and dedicated studio dancers, Cruz presents a diverse program of dances, expressing the full spectrum of human emotion. Deep cante jondo juxtaposes with light-hearted cante chico. The pulse of the cajón drum and the stirring poly-rhythms of heelwork weave and unravel to create tension and release so emblematic of flamenco. A guitar’s rapid picado and thundering rasgueado meet articulating arms and fingers of bailaoras as they bring forth other-worldly inspirations. Be moved by an intense and passionate evening of Bay Area flamenco culture with its zeal for community, respect for the art form, and deep emotion, hallmarks of this beautiful tradition that continue to generate new inspiration for itself and its audiences. The Golden Gate Men’s Chorus (GGMC), under the direction of Joseph Piazza, presents Giacomo Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, in collaboration with the Peninsula Women’s Chorus (PWC), under the direction of Dr. Anne K. Hege. An operatic mass or a sacred opera? No matter how you describe it, Puccini’s masterful choral work has it all — drama, beauty, mystery, passion, and the joyful, gorgeous vocal lines that immediately let you know it’s Puccini. Come hear the Golden Gate Men’s Chorus in concert with the Peninsula Women's Chorus this spring in a rarely heard performance of Puccini’s Messa di Gloria. Composed in 1880 and not revived for a second performance until 1952, this rediscovered choral work delights and moves audiences from the opening beauty of Kyrie, the jubilant Gloria, and the drama of the Credo, to the closing prayerful Agnus Dei, with music that hints to many of the familiar Puccini arias we know and love. Tenor Alex Boyer, who recently made his Metropolitan debut and is a resident tenor with Opera San Jose and graduate of the Merola Opera and Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Programs, will be the featured soloist. Both PWC and GGMC will also perform solo sets. The Peninsula Women’s Chorus’s selection will include the world premiere of “Night into Dawn,” a newly commissioned work written by Theresa Wong, PWC’s Composer-in-Residence and dedicated to the community of Lahaina. GGMC’s solo set will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Anton Bruckner in a performance of his sacred motets.

Words That Made the Difference: Brown vs. the Board of Education is based on the court cases involved in the fight to end school segregation. The play is set in the courtrooms of history, with the plaintiffs, witnesses, and justices whose courageous words culminated in the unanimous decision to end segregation in public schools. The script draws from the actual words from the memoirs of the late Chief Justice Earl Warren and from the trial transcripts of the five cases that were brought together before the Supreme Court. 2024 marks the 70th anniversary of the unanimous court decision. As Earl Warren was former governor of California and Marin County was the last county in the nation to adhere to the court order of desegregation, WORDS is powerfully relevant today. As our nation continues the work to be a truly just, fair, and anti-racist society, Words That Made the Difference sets the scene for exactly what the work within the courtroom looked like 70 years ago.
